What is gum contouring?
Here at The Lytham Dental Clinic we can correct your smile if you are unhappy about the amount of gum tissue that shows. Too much gum, uneven gum levels or gum recession can detract from an otherwise great looking smile. Since our lips frame the smile they too play an important role in your smile's appearance. The lips and gums should be in harmony. If your lip comes up too much it may give you a “gummy smile”. The solution is to reshape the gums to reveal more of your teeth. Artistic sculpting of gum tissue can make a dramatic improvement in one's smile. The healing time is very rapid and predictable.
Here at The Lytham Dental Clinic this is performed by Dr Jose Zurdo our specialist periodontist. Dr Zurdo is an internationally renowned specialist in the treatment of gum problems, and the reshaping of gum architecture, such that after his treatment you will be amazed with the results.
Why would gum contouring be suitable for me?
Gum contouring is a way of achieving symmetry of tooth proportions and gum line. It is a perfect option if you are suffering from:
- Teeth that appear too short or too square
- Teeth with gum recession
- Uneven gum line
- Excessive gum on display when smiling (so-called ‘gummy smile’)
- Gaps between the teeth that will be closed with cosmetic dentistry
- Teeth with gum disease

Q. Who performs the procedure?
A. We will arrange an initial consultation with Dr Williams who will examine your gums and discuss your requirements. He will also perform a full dental health check to advise you of any other conditions you need to be aware of. Dr Williams will also provide you with a personalised treatment plan and a comprehensive estimate of costs. Once you are happy to proceed, we will then schedule the cosmetic procedure with Dr Zurdo, our specialist periodontist.
Q. How do I look after my gums after gum contouring treatment?
A. Initially, we will arrange an appointment with Kate, our dental hygienist to ensure your gums are in great shape prior to treatment. At this appointment, the hygienist will discuss a personalised maintenance regime. Post treatment, your gums may feel a little sensitive for a few days, so it is best to rinse gently with warm salt water and to be careful when cleaning between them (interdentally).
Q. Is cosmetic gum contouring painful?
A. Absolutely not! Modern techniques mean that even the local anaesthetic we provide to make you comfortable can be done painlessly. Our highly trained staff, in a calm and relaxed atmosphere, will ensure that your visit is stress-free. Post treatment, the dentist may suggest painkillers for a few days in the unlikely event you have some discomfort, but generally healing is quick and patients soon enjoy the beauty of their new look!
Q. How much will it cost?
A. The cost of gum contouring really depends on your individual needs, the type of treatments needed and the materials used. At your initial appointment, we will discuss this with you and also provide you with a fully itemised treatment plan and estimate of costs. We will also provide you with payment plan options that can make cosmetic gum contouring affordable for you.
