What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a very safe, controlled and non-invasive way of lightening the shade of natural teeth. Here at The Lytham Dental Clinic we are experts in, and have masses of experience of teeth whitening. We are also an Enlighten Evolution 3 accredited centre.

Why would teeth whitening be suitable for me?

If you are dissatisfied with the colour of your teeth and you would like a whiter, brighter, healthier-looking and more youthful smile.

Case Studies:

Q. How can I safely whiten my teeth?

A. We find that many of our patients are displeased with the colour of their teeth. While enamel is the strongest substance in our body, it is porous and can stain. Culprits include coffee, tea, fruit juices, red wine and smoking. Trauma to teeth, tetracycline staining, nerve degeneration or simple aging can also change the colour of teeth.

Whitening toothpastes are effective surface stain removers but they won't brighten your teeth. They also often consist of abrasives and may wear down enamel and expose yellow dentine, the vital tooth structure that lies beneath the enamel. With long-term usage, this may actually then give the appearance of yellowing teeth.

Teeth whitening is one of the most common forms of cosmetic dentistry.  The Lytham Dental Clinic can brighten your smile with at-home customised tray whitening, Zoom WhiteSpeed in-surgery whitening or the very latest Enlighten Evolution 3 system, so that you are no longer worried about the shade of your teeth. Make an appointment today and we’ll look at what the best option for you might be.

Q. Tell me more about the systems you use.....

A. At The Lytham Dental Clinic we utilise three of the best systems available.

1) Enlighten Evolution 3.

In our opinion, this is the best tooth whitening system available. Enlighten Evolution 3 is the only whitening system in the world to guarantee VITA shade B1 on every case irrespective of starting shade. Enlighten Evolution 3 combines near zero sensitivity with the legendary predictability that the evolution system has always been known for. There are no lights, no dehydration whitening and no need for gum protection. Enlighten’s signature home system is acknowledged as the technology leader in professional teeth whitening. Every aspect has been fully optimised for predictability and ease of use.

Enlighten Evolution 3 has featured in numerous press articles and TV makeover shows, and has been used by a number of celebrities. Enlighten are routinely called by media companies for their expert opinion.

2) Zoom WhiteSpeed.

When it comes to whitening, only dental professionals have access to the most powerful professional-strength whitening and can ensure your treatment is safe and the results outstanding. Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed is a scientifically advanced teeth whitening procedure consisting of 3 x 15 minute in-surgery supervised sessions. It's ideal for anyone looking for immediate results, and with advanced LED whitening technology from Philips, the results are better than ever. And, in order to maintain your whitening treatment at home we also provide you with, completely free of charge, a set of customised whitening trays (see below).

3) At-home tooth whitening.

Home whitening is the least expensive route of whitening your teeth. We carefully take impressions of your teeth and make custom whitening trays that fit your teeth perfectly. These are used in combination with whitening gel at home. A small amount of gel is squeezed into the trays and they are then worn for 1 - 2 hours per day for 10 days or so.

Q. How white will my teeth get?

A. Enlighten Evolution 3 bleaching can whiten teeth up to 16 shades, as can at-home whitening. Results can vary but if used correctly the teeth will whiten dramatically.

Q. Will my teeth look too white?

A. No, natural teeth rarely look too white. In fact, we have NEVER had a complaint that teeth look too white!

Q. Will my existing crowns, veneers or fillings change colour?

A. No, sometimes you may need to change some of these after bleaching.

Q. Does it hurt?

A. You may get some transient sensitivity, however, we will give you easy to use desensitising swabs to take home, which work very quickly. Also desensitising toothpastes are very effective.

Q. How long does it take?

A. Up to 2 weeks, after we deliver your bleaching trays. These are thin and comfortable and must be worn for 1 – 2 weeks. With Enlighten Evolution 3, after 2 weeks you need to come back to us for the second treatment which takes only 40 minutes.

Q. How long does whitening last?

A. Results can last indefinitely with some very simple maintenance, wearing the trays once or twice every month or so.

Q. Is it safe?

A. Completely, the materials we use in bleaching have been used in dentistry for over 100 years. That said, please be very wary of unregistered “providers” or so-called “tooth whitening specialists” who purport to offer professional tooth whitening. They are completely unlicensed, have little or no knowledge of teeth, are highly likely to do you more harm than good and are practicing dentistry illegally.

Q. How much will it cost?

A. Teeth whitening is a life changing procedure yet very affordable. The cost of teeth whitening really depends on your individual needs, the type of treatments needed, and the materials used. At your initial appointment, we will discuss the various options with you and also provide you with a fully itemised treatment plan and estimate of costs. We will also provide you with payment plan options that can make cosmetic dental improvements affordable for you. That said, we often have special whitening offers, so call The Clinic to find out more.

Q. Wouldn’t whitening be sufficient enough to give me the attractive smile I desire?

A. It depends on the appearance of your teeth. If your teeth are crooked, chipped and crowded, then whitening them will simply make them white crooked, chipped and crowded teeth! A situation like that may require porcelain veneers which can overcome all of those imperfections at the same time. Alternatively, Cfast or In-Line Orthodontics can to give the desired result. However, if your teeth are straight and in good shape, then whitening will give you a youthful, dazzling smile.

Q. How can I correct severely discoloured teeth from Tetracycline?

A. Tetracycline is an antibiotic used to treat a number of illnesses in adults and children. It can cause severe staining in teeth if used in growing children and sometimes with prolonged use in the young adult. The teeth have a grey or dark brown appearance to them and sometimes, bands run across the front of the teeth. We can occasionally use whitening procedures or if necessary, porcelain veneers are a truly beautiful answer to this problem. A once dark and unattractive smile can be a brilliant and beautiful white one.
